With a snip of the scissors they were off.

About 30 children on bicycles and scooters flooded the Kurow children's learn-to-ride bike park after Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher and Ahuriri Community Board member Calum Reid, of Kurow, cut the ribbon to officially open the Waitaki Valley bike park yesterday morning.

After updating the playground at the northern end of the town's main street, yesterday's learn-to-ride bike park opening was recognition of a major community board project for the town of roughly 400, Mr Reid said.

And the community was not done - a BMX jump park, a skateboard park and a basketball hoop were all planned for Kurow's youth.

The work was not done either as there was about $45,000 left to raise before the final stage was opened, hopefully, in October.

The project received funding from the Waitaki District Council among other significant sponsors. The Waitaki Valley Society had contributed $25,000.

"It's all about getting kids outside,'' Mr Reid said.

Community board chairman Graham Sullivan said the youth park was an asset for the entire Waitaki Valley.
